I'm 27 and have always loved the outdoors - having grown up in Country QLD. I mainly enjoy tramping and camping. I've taken more of an interest in learning outdoor skills since nearly coming a…Continue

Suggestions for a tramp?

Hi everyone,Next Monday (15th) I have to be in Rotorua/Tauranga for work and I start early. I was going to make a weekend of it and get in a tramp on the preceding weekend. I'd be looking to do one that goes for two days or overnight basically. Any recommendations? I'm going to check out the DOCS website but thought I'd plumb this body of knowledge as well! Thanks in advance.BSee More

"Thanks for the replies. It looks like we'll do the Kepler and the Routeburn pretty much back to back (2 day break in between). Routeburn is only 32 kms and looks like a piece of piss. Can't wait!"

"That looks great! I do tend to use the back-country meals on a tramp to save weight but for camping real food is way better. Some of the best meals I've eaten have been cooked over a fire although I'm sure the atmosphere added to it."

Advice wanted on great walks

Hi,As I mentioned in my intro post, I've done a few of the great walks in NZ (Waikaremoana, Abel Tasman, Tongariro and Heaphy - the hardest!) and am planning to add to them in November out of the following three; Kepler, Routeburn and Stewart Island. My mate is real keen to do the Stewart Island one but I'm less than enthused about tramping in mud and I'm no ornithologist so I'm not sure it'd really be up my alley.Has anyone done any of the three I've mentioned and if so what was your…See More

Hey Bill great that you joined up!

Have a look around and let me know if you have any questions. When the members build up it would be cool to get a skills evening up and running. We could practice things like friction fires, flintknapping, etc and watch Ray Mears and things like that if you are interested.

Check out the BushcraftNZ Library too theres a few good book you might like to borrow.

Let me know if you have any questions!
