hey ryan, the magnesium block is a bit tricky to get going, you have to have really small shavings with bigger shavings. What you did with taking it off is a really good idea though.

Have you found the "magnesium" block to work? Mine was useless. Even indoors the shavings don't catch alight. I ended up carefully taking the strip of firesteel off the block and making a little sleeve on my knife sheath to store it in

im in the middle of re doing my kit. i had my kit in my webbing, it was good but it was designed for when i went out in the head lands to search for and investigate/document the WWII defences. just waiting on some items but i will post when its complete and i think i have a pic of the webbing kit in the computer some where. and its ok, its always handy to know things like that, i collect militaria so that's how i knew about it.
