I knew a guy who did some training with SARINZ. He had a number of rubber bands or O-rings on a walking pole that he used to move up and down to set as measurements for stride length etc for tracking. They would be lighter and more versatile than a tape measure, even if you carried tehm to put onto a pole when you needed it.

still not, should turn up soon i hope. that's quite a good mini FAK. the only thing i can think of that you might want to add would be a military issue FFD or a civi no. 15 wound dressing but i have heard of people using duct tape and gauze as a supplement. how do you soak cotton wool with Vaseline? sadly pine trees aren't to common in aus . did you make the pouches out of cotton drill?

@zakk Hey did you bags turn up from ebay? How are they? The knife is buffalo river brand, they have them at the auckland army surplus shop for $35. The magnesium firesteel was annoying me cos it is a cheapo brand and the "magnesium" was terrible. Couldn't get the shavings to light even indoors let alone in the wild/wet. So I cut the firesteel out of the magnesium block and just use the firesteel by itself with other tinder (cotton wood soaked in vaseline, fatwood shavings).

The first aid kit I carry is a bit "bare bones" and isnt as comprehensive as the standard kit which is always a better idea if you have the room. The kit contains stuff related to the activities I do and the injuries I have a large chance of incurring.

Cuts/scrapes: Antiseptic cream, steristrips, needle & thread, gauze, sticky dressings, tape, broad spectrum antibiotics

Burns: Parafin gauze, antiseptic cream, stick dressing, tape.

Headaches/wasp stings: Panadol, codeine.

Broken limb: A stick and my leather belt or duct tape for a splint

Splinters: Needle and razorblade

hi mate, awesome set out, i got 4 of them Finnish gas mask bags (cheaper then just one) off ebay but i will be getting them hopefully this week. what brand is the clasp knife do you use? and what first aid items do you carry? just getting an idea as im new to bush craft. i did scouts and cubs for a total of 6 years but for some odd reason they never taught us to carry items like the above. i use to cary a first aid kit but that was for my patrol so I'm ust to packing and carrying a big first aid kit. also my i ask how long do the magnesium fire steels last? i got one the other day but want to know if the fire steel lasts as long as the swedish ones.

Although I am still very new to the topic, the measuring tape is good for developing tracking skills. I try to record the size of impressions, lengths between strides etc. Still very new to the topic but would eventually like to be able to identify and follow tracks well
