Hey everyone,

thanks for all your replies.

 

We are especially keen to learn about bushfood, like edible herbs that you can pick the whole year round, that contain heaps of vitamins :) Also, we would like to learn hunting skills/techniques and collecting edible bugs and insects.

In general, we would like to learn all the skills involved in finding the right plants, across different types of terrains, so when in need, emergency or out of an organic food principle, we can eat off the land without damaging the ecosystem.

 

If there are people who are keen in learning this, we should be organize this within a few weeks. How about  the Friday the 10th of February - Sunday the 12th? As a backup date, we were thinking of 17-19 February, in case the majority of you prefer another date.

Please let us know which date you prefer and if anyone has this knowledge and skills?

Otherwise, we should ask around if someone knows a knowlegdable person in Otago! :)

Andy: it would be great if you could advise on a location and possibilities. We just arrived in Dunedin a week ago and are not familiar with the region yet.

Also, if anyone knows good books or websites with pictures about bushfood in New Zealand, we would like to hear about them as well :)

Hmm that a bit close timing wise as I'm off on a trip the weekend before.

But here's a book you need if your interested in native bush foods:

A Field Guide to the Native Edible Plants of New Zealand
by Andrew Crowe

Theres also another book I'm trying to remember that also covers shellfish and such and how to prepare them.

Hi Ryan I will double check the dates but both are looking good at this stage.The book mentioned below by Andy Crow is fantastic.I find that the native foods are kind of divided into sections ie Alpine,Sub Alpine and coastal.Its hard to find and area thats accessable for all of these.Maybe someone knows of a place.I know some great areas off the beaten track in Fiordland access would be from Te Anau would be overnight.However to access would involve chopper in boat out at cost its $300 p/p thats for a group of 6 not sure if thats too much for some but we would be able to initiate our skills in an envioronment they were ment for.If anyone is interested go to www.adventurewalks and look at the Lake McIvor walk.Andy

Hi Andy:

I think that area would be really nice, its look very beautiful. However, me and my friends would prefer to do it as cheap as possible. Do you know of any cheaper options in Fiordland ?

Concerning the date: we could also have 2-4 March as an option. But let's see if and what people react to the proposed dates. Our group of friends would prefer to do it as soon as possible, so we have more profit of the learnt skills :) So lets hope the other people respond soon as well :)
