BELT KIT FOR BUSHCRAFT/SURVIVAL

Dave's post about using webbing for Bushcraft got me thinking (uh-oh).

What's in your Bushcraft Belt-Kit? Got any views on must-haves? Used (and given up on!) any 'lemons'? Lessons learned?

I've been trying to source some from overseas, 5 cards @ 5 x Power for around $10.00 US. The guy just got back to me stating that they don't ship to N.Z unfortunately, only U.S and Canada. I shall keep looking.

Interesting Top Tip - Thanks - I'll give that a Billy whizz. One of the downsides of the Fresnels seems to be the lack of availability of stronger magnifications..........2x-3x seems to be the norm (unless I'm looking for them in the wrong places!).

Cool, cheers for that, I read somewhere that if you put a drop of water on the center of the lens, it enhances the strength of the focal point.

Fresnel lenses work fine...they're just a bit odd to manipulate for best effect initially. Instead of a focussed 'circle' of light, though...they generate a rectangle/square affair which just seems weird, although it does the job!

All good mate, I forgot to add a small folding saw to that list, it weighs nothing (plastic handle and thin blade) it's about 125mm when folded. Oh and my torch is a P3, not L3 (not sure what happened there). They have a metal clip on the side, if you reverse it, you can clip it onto a cap (hat), so as it can be used as a head torch. I used to carry similar gear, but bulkier (Large folding saw, heavy belt knife, head torch etc) but have downsized everything to make it light and compact. I have been thinking about taking out the magnifying glass, and replacing it with a small piece of plastic magnifying sheet. (I'd have to field test it first to make sure it will work).

Cheers,

All the best.

Mate, I'm with you........can't be parted from me knife! Seems we pretty much paddle the Waka in the same direction...light gear; minimal kit - all the gear to address the priorities of survival if needs be! Cheers for sharing, Mate.

Knife (Mercator), Small Torch (Led Lenser L3) + Spare Battery, 5m of Paracord, Whistle, Small Lighter, 4 Ranger Bands (Bicycle Tubing, 1 Inch/25mm Wide), Ferro Rod, Snaplock Bag (400mm x 600mm), Button Compass, Magnifying Glass (40mm in diameter, 6 x Power), Cotton Bandana, Folded Piece Of Tinfoil (about 400mm x 400mm) 4 x Cotton Balls, Chapstick, and Survival Blanket. <--- All of this together is very lightweight. On the other side of my belt I have a small First Aid Kit. ...P.S I wear these on my belt, in case I was to be separated from my pack (i.e lost or somehow fallen down a bank/small cliff) I have been lost, about 25 years ago (I was 15) I had nothing on me and still survived the night, by using the knowledge I had of bushcraft at the time (making a small shelter and raising myself off the ground) I didn't get much sleep and it was a very cold night, but I survived. The kit I carry on my belt would insure I could survive or even thrive, comfortably (especially after gaining many more years of knowledge). ...If I was to have a choice of one thing to take in the bush, it would be a knife.

Yup. "Given Up On".

I have given up on carrying a ton of equipment, toys and gadgets that I very rarely used lol. I have scaled down my EDC (everyday carry) to about 1/2 of what it used to be.

I used to carry so many items to try and cover every possible scenario I could face in the bush. It just weighed me down and I found a lot of my focus was spent on thinking about my stuff rather than observing and enjoying what was around me.

The new trimmer, slimmer me is much better lol
