They seem very popular in dollarpe, mainly because you have room to stand and you can in most models have a fire inside to cook and warm yourself.Any info would be welcome.Cheers Norm.See More

Hi Norm, I finally got around to starting the firemaking project today.   I couldn't find the bow drill kit that I thought I had.   I wrote about what I did here:

Cheers Norm !  I have had success using kaikomako and mahoe.   I've also created glowing coals using kawakawa for the drill and mahoe for the base.   It was a real thrill the first time I did it.   I'd now like to master the hand drill technique.   There are guys that have made a glowing coal in much less than a minute with a hand drill.   Maybe we should try your wood.   I guess we'd have to have some sort of a bow and a bearing socket.   I will see what I've got tucked away in the shed.

I bought my Tramontina from Robin Exports....   their core business seems to be supplying goods to the Pacific Islands.    Here's the link:

I like Cold Steel... even if I am being sucked in by the hype. I have a Bushman with the hollow handle, a Finn Bear and a Medium Voyager folder. I'd like a Bushman folder to play with, and I've long been fascinated with the big Trailmaster bowie but I bet I wouldn't carry it much once the novelty wore off.

I have a 10" Tramontina machete which is amazing. I imagine it would be lighter than the Trailmaster and it only cost about ten bucks. I've used it to split carcases down through the backbone by batoning it with a bit of firewood and the edge doesn't seem to mind it at all.

But I must check out the Long Hunter. I don't need another knife at all, but I love them and it is exciting waiting for it in the post.

That's no good Norm.   If you're like me you probably spend some of your 'indoors' time looking at interesting stuff on the 'net.   Or thinking about a new knife you really need.

Well Norm...... fancy meeting you here.

I haven't been doing much that is bushcrafty lately... except for making a couple of cage traps to try to catch some rabbits on a neighbor's place.

I'm still loving my Suzuki thanks.   Best wishes.... Coote
