Plant and tree identification

So I am getting into identifying different plants and trees but I like to be certain that it is what I am looking for. I was looking at  the friction fire bow drill thread and saw that sycamore was a good wood to use.

So I did some googling to see what sycamore looks like and I am pretty certain that there are a few trees just down the road from my house.

Could someone please clarify for me?

Not good on these unfortunately. I am just getting into identifying edible plants at the moment. Real interesting and practical to know the variety and uses>
