Hi guys and girls,
I'm stoked to have found this site- great idea! My name is Evan, I'm based in Nelson and I love tramping and motorcycle camping round the south island. If anyone is keen to meet up for a chat and see if we'd be good company for trips etc, I'd be well up for that.
Also I've had a lifelong fascination with axes (and basically all outdoors equipment, but mainly axes :), I really enjoy renovating old heads and giving them a new lease of life. I have a massive stack of old heads in the garage that I sharpen, polish and re-handle on rainy days, and I'm very keen to start making my own handles. If anyone local would be willing to give me a few tips or show me the ropes I'm sure we could do some kind of skill trade!

Hi Evan,
I like axes too, though many of mine wouldn't agree, they are well used but not so well cared for. I have 5 at the moment, the best being an old Kelly axe, needs a new handle. I hate buying handles, they are crap quality and very expensive.
I bought an axe with a fibreglass handle which lasted about two weeks.
Have you had any feedback on good NZ woods for handles?
I read an old account of forest workers using Rata for handles though not sure how you could source rata.
