Hi everyone,

I just watched Alone in the Wilderness featuring Dick Proenneke. It was a really good watch and shows what incredible things one man can achieve.

Dick Proenneke retired at age 50 in 1967 and decided to build his own cabin on the shore of Twin Lakes. The first summer he scouted for the best cabin site, and cut and peeled the logs he would need for his cabin. Dick Proenneke returned the next summer to finish the cabin where he lived for over 30 years. Dick filmed his adventures, and Bob Swerer later turned the film into a video so we can all watch this amazing man build his cabin by hand.

Regards,

Andy

Yep, what impressed me was the care and attention to detail he showed in everything did.
A truly imspiring gentleman who really got it.

Hey Andrew - I'm a bit late on this thread, but I only recently joined the forum. Also seen Alone in the Wilderness and loved it. It was incredible to me, after watching Dick build that cabin, to find out that he was a mechanic by trade! It was his father who was a chippie.
Ryan - if you haven't seen the whole documentary - definitely check it out.
People like Dick Preonneke have really started to inspire me, because they tend to highlight just how basically incompetent most of us are these days. My other interest is woodworking hand tools and the skills that are gradually being lost there. There's another documentary that was made as a follow up to Alone in the Wilderness called: Alaska: Silence and Solitude, which catches up with him much later in life.

Just checked out the website, very interesting. Wow the log cabin he built with handtools is pretty impressive!

Cheers for that
