Just got a knife sharpening block out of storage and it is coated in this strange. I think it may be oil which has absorbed a load of dust. Has this happened to anyone else?

I finally tried my Swiss army knife, locking blade model, on my firesteel and it threw good sparks. I have tried other stainless knives on the firesteel and hardly any sparks. So I carry a Frost Mora…Continue

Hi all, (Merry Christmas by the way), what do you think about using dive knives for Bushcraft/ outdoor/ survival use? I found two dive knives on the Hunting and Fishing website; they both have a normal edge on one side and a serrated edge and hook on the other side, here are the links:
Tried it again, didn't work. Maybe it's time I gave up on the file?
I've been trying to upload a couple of knife making PDF's, The Advanced Knifemakers Manual, and The Complete Bladesmith, but as they get posted as a link, they won't come up to be read. How do I post PDF's on this site? Am I able to?
In case anyone was wondering, my fourth attempt at annealing a file didn't work. It came out just as hard before. I have no idea what's going wrong.
I have some knifesmithing PDF's I found online that I'd like to upload if I can. Is there any way I can?
Hay take a look at this video http://youtu.be/sqiyaNVbsEI and http://youtu.be/fvVq6TauTC8
Thanks for replying, don't worry about the delay, I've come down with some sort of lung infection/whooping cough, so I've had to postpone my next annealing attempt anyway. I'll try it this way, keep your fingers crossed!
Apologies for the delay in replying, work is seriously cutting into my leisure time! you can elevate the file with a few pieces of scrap metal, but have enough to prevent the file from sagging from heat. keep the fire going for as long as you would an evening heating fire and leave the file in there under the ashes till morning, this worked for me.
Thanks for replying, just a couple of questions:
What did you use to elevate the file? How long after it went red did you keep the fire going? Any other specifics that could help? Thanks a lot.
