Kei te noho maatou ki Motueka aianei ki raro i te tihi o ngaa maunga a Tuu-ao-wharepapa raaua ko Pukeone. Ko ngaa iwi ko Ngaati Raarua, ko Te Aati Awa. Noo reira, kia ora taatou katoa. My son Asher and I are researching traditional Maaori techniques for fire-lighting for his homework. In the Maui legend it talks about the Kaikomako being the tree that Maui placed the fingernail of his grandmother, Mahuika. According to our Far North oral traditions it was the Mahoe that was used. Is there anyone who knows how to make fire the old way? Second to that, I am looking at purchasing a Gerber knife. Any suggestions?
