Hi all,

Great to see a bushcraft forum dedicated to NZ conditions.

I am a LandSAR volunteer and like the idea of minimalisation and of being able to fend for myself in the bush without all the mod-cons.

Have done a basic survival course with MSC (although I had to question the value of "survival training" where you were only allowed to use dead materials in a patch of scruffy, heavily stock damaged regrowth at the back of a farm).

Key interests are tracking, specifically mantracking (from a Search & Rescue perspective), and exploring wild foods,  and so far can say "Been There, Done That" to Possum (Compulsory really), Huhu, Weta, Fern roots, puffballs, koura, couple of wood fungi and freshwater mussels.  Always looking for more to tick off.

Haven't used a tent in years, and only break out the bivvy bag if it's really inclement.

Anyway, off to have a good rummage around the site.

Look forward to stirring up the grey matter with new info!

Cheers

Hey mate (love the sign off) cheers for the introduction.

I was involved with the Auckland LandSAR team for a short while before I had to put it on hold with my postgrad studies. The outings I did go out on I really enjoyed, a really good way of building up your skill set thats for sure!

You mention you don't tent it often (neither) so what do you usually use? A tarp? perhaps you could elaborate in the shelter section of the forum.

Wild foods are always interesting, NZ is a bit tough compared to other countries I recon, I went out for a 3 day explore with nothing but a "guide to edible plants of NZ" field guide, basic fishing and trapping gear (and emergency food of course).....came back a VERY hungry man! Straight to McDonalds if I remember rightly.

Well great to have you on board, look forward to learning more from you

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for the welcome.

Agree NZ is definitely...sparse is probably the best word in terms of terrestrial nourishment (the coast is a much different story fortunately). Coming from the UK with all its nuts, berries and all the other useful flora and fauna, the green wilderness of NZ was surprisingly tough to get a feed. Definitely survival rather than thrive without spending many hours building up the skill set.

I too did a three day stint in the Waitaks in my youth, but fortunately bivvied up in an area infested with possums so didn't go hungry.

Re: shelter: yep, generally just throw a flysheet up.

Cheers
