I've been in Dunedin area for 28 months finally settling in Waiqouaiti. I came over from Wales with my other half and our 2 dogs, a white gsd and a white gsd x greyhound,  hunted both dogs. Unfortunately my white gsd died 3 months after getting here, although I was then given a white gsd pup from a member of the NZ white shepherd club she is 22 months old now, I also have a lurcher and a greyhound bitch in pup at the mo . I hunt with my dogs, I love nothing more than being out in the wilds (as I call it) with a dog or 2 hunting up my next dinner. I hunt mostly rabbits , have done for the last 20 odd yrs. Using the dogs to catch them when I can , although for the land I go onto I have to use the 22 aswell to do a bit of rabbit control. I use to use ferrets and nets to hunt the old bunny back in Wales . I also enjoy my fishing when I can get and do some , was shown the splendors of an eel net catch a few days ago. At the mo I am trying to establish a good vedge plot and get my meat from the wild/countryside. I also have a passion for knives , made a couple but used to collect them , most of my collection was sold off before we left much to my disappointment but needs must, an all that.

I have had an interest in bush craft for many yrs and enjoy reading on the subject. Back in Wales I watched most of the Ray Mears Bushcraft series on tv  , envious of him and his knowledge , all that wild food on the doorstep of us in the UK and all most people know is how to shop at a supermarket.

This is a fantastic country and I'm really enjoying being here , just wish I had came out a while back when the body wasn't so old and achy.

Glad I found this site its great and I hope to learn from it.

Cheers

Steve

Welcome along mate, sounds like your in the right frame of mind to make the most of it here. =)

Hi Steve,

Where abouts in Wales are you from? i am from Denbighshire in North Wales.

I used to catch rabbits with ferrets and nets too, but half the time my ferrets fell asleep down the rabbit hole. I used to go ferreting after school every day. It seems like a waist of money buying meat from a shop when you can get it for free.

Cheers Te Hopo .

I'm from Newport South Wales originally Jack, though I lived in a few surrounding areas and ended up in Aberystwyth for the last few yrs before coming here.  I've tried a bit of ferreting, unsuccessfully so far, over here.  I have a ferret locater, an electronic collar works up to 8 ft down and a locater box which pin points the ferret/collar . Soon find them when they lie up. Can't find my ferreting pics here's a few of
