A Fallow doe taken with a .275 Rigby

Hi guys

I'm a blogger from London, interested in hunting, fishing, bushcraft and wild food. My brother is living in Christchurch  so I'm hope to be coming to visit you in the next couple of years.

Question: I really enjoyed Crump's A Good Keen Man - he wrote quite a few others which would you recommend?

In the meantime please stop by my blog

Suburbanbushwacker.blogspot.com

Looking forward to learning how you do things down there

Gidday SBW,

You're very welcome to come to our beautiful country and I hope that you can make it here.

I don't have any experience in bush travel in any other parts of the world but the thing to know about NZ is that weather can change very quickly. So even in summer, you need to be prepared to cold wet windy conditions, especially if you are travelling in the high country. Having carried all that gear to the tops, you'll probably be baking hot and never need it at all. But it's a necessity to have it. Most fatalities in the bush are from hypothermia or river crossing accidents.

Your navigation needs to be up to scratch. It's pretty hard getting around in the 'clag'. ( Misty conditions ). Where I am, in the southern North Island, the GM angle (magnetic declination) is about 23 degrees.

There are no dangerous animals or insects that you need to worry about... you can sleep almost anywhere. The worst you will find will be an abundance of sandflies at low altitudes in the South Island and maybe mossies if you are unlucky. However, they don't carry any diseases so there is nothing to worry about.

Our bush changes quite a bit with altitude. Do some climbs up to the bushline and you'll see what I mean. It' s worth the effort.

There are fantastic places to go all over the country. Look for anywhere with plenty of bush and you can't go wrong.

Check out http://www.topomap.co.nz/ to get you inspired.

Hope you can make it. You won't regret it...

Cheers
