Found this site while looking for info on NZ woods suitable for long bows. I'm originally from England and I've a great love of the outdoors/bushcraft etc. I'm also the chairman of the English War Bow Society NZ which is group dedicated to shooting the massive long bows (we are shooting up to 140lbs at the moment) of the medieval-tudor period. We've discovered that bows of that poundage can be made out of Kanuka. At our latest shoot in Taupo a 137lb Kanuka bow broke all of our current distance records.
I'm looking forward to learning as much as I can from some of the excellent info that's available here.
We will have more bows made out of Kanuka Rob as its proved itself as suitable wood for big longbows. There are some frets appearing but as far as I know the bow is still doing the business (it lives in Cambridge).
