Hi all,  love bush camping, question?  apart from nets and bug sprays what do you use to ward of mosquito's or  have you found any native plants that work or help?or what recommendations do you have?

Cheers Te (stone hobbit).

Keep the fire producing lost of smoke, they hate that :) Apart from that I'd also love to know some plants that could have anti-mosquito properties.

The best mozzie trap I've ever come across is made as follows:

You will need -

  • an empty plastic water or soft drink bottle, cut horizontally into two pieces (bottom half = 2/3 the height of the bottle) with the cap removed from the top piece
  • 1 teaspoon of yeast
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 50-100 ml fresh water (from a stream or a tap is fine)
  • black tape (electrical tape works well)

Method:

  1. Invert the top of the bottle and insert it into the bottom of the bottle.
  2. Add yeast, sugar and water (this produces carbon dioxide gas and will divert mozzies away from you, into the funnel, where they become trapped).
  3. Wrap black tape around the bottom of the bottle (mozzies are attracted to black-coloured objects).
  4. Place mozzie trap(s) at least 3 metres from where you intend to sit and don't wear black!

Note:  pre-packed sugar and yeast can be added to bottle in advance for quick assembly when you reach your campsite/picnic spot - just don't add the water until you have cut the bottle in half and assembled your trap.

P.S. This is also an environmentally friendly solution to the mozzie issue, providing you remember to collect and remove your traps before you leave.

Hi there Miki thanks for that will give it a go.

Dry cow pats on the fire

hahaha thanks..(yum nothing better than old dried dung). I have been looking into native plants and found a few good ones that I can just pick and rub on. Once I get the chance to try it all out, I'll then let you's know the results but thanks for getting back to me and cheers. Safe journey's
