Choice of wood for heavy handle?

Hi all,

I am considering rehandling a 17" Parang, nothing wrong with the existing handle, it's just a whim, and was wondering what peoples recommendations would be for a native wood that isn't prone to splitting, but has the required physical properties (and looks nice).

It's full tang if that helps/makes a difference.

My botanical expertise is limited to Gorse and Radiata, so please use small words.

Thanks

not sure about a native wood, but I have handled knives with Kwila, and it is really good to work with rasps and files all the way down to sandpaper.
